| The right tile can make your remodeling project shine! |
Tip #1: Where do You Live?
It's a good idea to consider regional building and decoration styles in the remodeling plans for your bathroom. For example, if you live in the Southwest, you may want to consider adding Saltillo or another distinctly regional floor tile ceramic to your bathroom remodeling plans. You also may want to consider distressed wood, as this is a popular decorating choice in this area. If you live in the Midwest, consider darker woods and finishes that suit the regional building styles very well. Don't let regionalism overwhelm your personal choices, however.
Tip #2: Budget
Sometimes, a budget that isn't quite as high as you'd like is actually an advantage. When you don't have as much money to work with as you would prefer, it sometimes forces you to make choices that you may not have considered otherwise. For example, you may find that a particularly attractive type of tile is much more appealing in the room then you would have guessed if you had had the option of going for the most expensive tiles on the market. Don't think of your budget as a restriction; think of it as a framework within which you can work to make something creatively and uniquely your own. Often ceramic tile on sale is a popular tile that was bought in a huge bulk. Don’t be afraid to take a look.
Tip #3: Finishes
There are plenty of ways that you can add finishes to your bathroom that will give it a distinctive character. For example, you could pick finishes that have something of an Italian feel, a Mediterranean feel or a distinctly American feel, depending upon what you want to express. You can theme the entire bathroom in this way without making the theme garish or without lacking subtlety in the design that you choose. This is a great way to express yourself and to create a unique space without going overboard or gilding the lily.
Tip #4: Photos
Sometimes, it's easier to consider what you want for the room when you look at it in two dimensions rather than in three. Take some photographs of your bathroom and look at them instead of always looking at the room in person. You can also use photo editing software to remove and add elements if you're handy with these programs. You may realize that 18 x 18 tile overpowers your room and you should go with a smaller 12 x 12 tile. In remodeling, size matters.
Tip #5: Books
Go ahead and buy a few books that show architectural styles that you're interested in. Pay attention to the elements of the styles that appeal to you. Take into account the color, use of space and use of line and see if you can mimic it in your own bathroom. For example, if you have an affinity for Mediterranean designs, see if you can find pictures of the traditional colors that you can match with tiles that you can buy for your own bathroom.
Ultimately you need to be sure to pick a style and color scheme that suits you personally. After all, you'll be the one cleaning those floor tiles for years to come!
